The RomaNatura Nature Reserve manages over 16,000 hectares of protected nature, located entirely within the Rome metropolitan area, a scrign of invaluable biodiversity. Three of its protected areas are part of the Life BEEadapt project: Valle dei Casali, Tenuta dei Massimi, and Decima Malafede; these are the site of interventions aimed at increasing environmental diversity through sustainable planning techniques in rural and urban areas.
The Decima Malafede Nature Reserve encompasses, with its over 6,000 hectares, a portion of the Roman countryside between the southwestern sector of the city, the Lazio Volcano, and the Tyrrhenian coast. It is the largest protected area in the system managed by the RomaNatura Nature Reserve and is characterized by the presence of areas of high naturalistic, landscape, and historical-archaeological interest.
The Valle dei Casali Nature Reserve, a green corridor within an urban area, boasts vegetation resulting from the predominantly agricultural land use, the presence of a dense network of ditches, the Tiber River, and its proximity to urbanized areas of the city.
The Tenuta dei Massimi Nature Reserve covers approximately 868 hectares and extends west of the last built-up areas of Rome in the Corviale, Borgata del Trullo, and Pisana neighborhoods. It is a typical feature of the Roman countryside, where vast flat areas, mostly occupied by crops and meadows, alternate with hills and small lateral valleys, covered, on the steeper slopes, by woodlands.
Agriculture is widely practiced within these areas, which is why three businesses have joined the project, supporting the interventions envisioned by Life BEEadapt. These are two cooperatives, Il trattore and Agricoltura Nuova, and an agritourism business, Cavendo Tutus.
As of May 2025, these were the results achieved: 2,243 trees had been planted, 41 trees had been planted, 9 areas would be subject to delayed or differentiated mowing, and 3 beehotels were about to be installed shortly.
